Hobby Sheet Foam Airplanes
Thanks to Flite Test, my sons and I made a lot of hobby foam sheet EPP display board Flite Test airplanes. Seriously, I do not know what they are commonly called, but we all call them Flite Test Airplanes. Those guys were the ones that did an amazing job of getting a whole new generation flying RC airplanes, so it is in their honor. I hope they do not mind.
Flite Test can be found here:
We have made several of their aircraft. I do not have any pictures for you from all of the ones I built with our oldest two sons, but here are a few pictures from the youngest:
At some point, you end up with a bunch of RC airplanes (well, the ones you have not yet crashed yet):
And, you may end up with totes full of RC airplane parts:
The coolest thing about these inexpensive airplanes is that it is not a big deal when you crash them...
You simply get to build more:
At some point we started cheating! I used my CNC to cut out the foam. Normally you would by a laser cut kit from Flite Test or you would cut out one yourself with a shop knife.
My trick was to use a 5 mm router bit; its width matched the 5 mm thickness of the hobby foam board. With that, I could cut away slots or areas which needed a relief to be folded. Take a sheet, staple it down to the CNC, stand back and watch!
Here is a video of my CNC cutting EPP foam sheet:
Go fly...
..and crash...
...and build again!
Keep building!
